Philip Boyden

Phillip Boyden has now returned as a full time member of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra since 2004. Phillip was a sub-principal with the orchestra before leaving to pursue a freelance career in 2001. As a freelance violinist, Phillip works with many of the UK’s leading orchestras, including Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, English Chamber Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, City of London Sinfonia, BBC Concert Orchestra, and Bournemouth Sinfonietta.

Before moving down to Dorset, Phillip was the solo violinist for the Steve Martland Band, touring and performing around Europe and the UK, and travelling as far afield as the island of Penang in Malaysia.

Phillip’s first appearance as soloist was at the age of 16, performing the Kabalevsky Violin Concerto, and he has continued to play recitals and concertos since then, including performances of the Bruch and Mendelssohn Violin Concertos. Phillip’s next venture is to perform Sarasate’s Carmen Fantasy.

During his time working in London, Phillip was a founder member of the Pegasus String Quartet, and also joined the Theodore String Quartet as their first violinist. Both quartets performed concerts and recitals, and also provided music for different functions and events in and around London and the South of England. Phillip also regularly played for the Hill String Quartet.

Phillip studied at Chetham’s School of Music, before moving on to complete his studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. While at the Guildhall, Phillip lead the Symphony, Chamber and Opera Orchestras, and worked under the baton of Rostropovitch and Sir Colin Davis.

While studying, Phillip still found time to lead the Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, and also the National Youth Orchestra of Wales. Phillip was the recipient of the Francon Thomas award for services to the NYOW.
